Surprise!

Last night was wonderful. I was minding my own business; my wife had just finished cooking a whopper of a dinner (beef fajitas). The Wire was on television and I was resting after a long day. All of a sudden, I was bombarded with a myriad of calls. I was silently cursing every caller. All I was doing was trying to get some me time, but no, everyone had to continue to call. One of those callers, my friend, was asking me to come over and fix her laptop as she believed that it wasn't working to its full potential. Hesitantly, I got up off the couch and went across the way to her apartment.

While going to her apartment, I noticed an abnormal increase in foreigners wandering through the halls. I couldn't help but to think what was going on. Without giving the unique situation a second thought, I continued on to my friend's house. A few minutes later I get the call.

"Baby, I accidentally spilled water on your computer." With the quickness, I bolted back across the parking lot and back up to my house. Opening the door, I couldn't help but to think that my monster of a computer was taking its last breath. "Surprise!" My wife had meticulously planned my birthday party! Everyone was there and it was a great time. Luckily, my PC wasn't hurt; it was all part of her diabolical plan to scare me out of my wits!  What a party it was!!!!

An interesting observation

Yesterday, I was teaching writing to a group of 5th and 6th grade language learners. I've been teaching them for a few months and I am very proud of them. They had to turn in their essays they wrote for homework. One of their topics was to choose a side and argue it; the topic was on whether or not parents should spend money on sending their children to hogwons (after-school academies). One student's paper caught my eye. In summary, she said that parents must send their children to hogwons because if Korean parents do not send their children to hogwons, then the children are "more stupid" than their friends. It was interesting to get a glimpse of how students think. I can't help but to wonder if what she wrote was her opinion and her opinion alone, or, was there more than just her opinion behind the writing. EFL teaching is full of surprises, every day. I wonder what's in store for me next class!

Welcome to my blog!

I am just getting this started up. I hope to post my experiences as an ESL and EFL instructor here. I am sure there will be plenty for me to say in the upcoming months. Anyways, if you are reading this, I hope that you find the blog section interesting. What will I write about? Well, among other things, I am sure I will write about teaching English in South Korea, different types of lesson plans I create, the worksheets and handouts I create, etc. I was thinking about updating my blog every time I update the ESL and EFL worksheet, handout, and test pages. I haven't decided yet; blogging is new to me.
